Back in the Motherland

Hello!

Well, the weather in Chile took a turn for the worse and to make a long story short, all three travelers are back in the USA. Kareem is in WV, Steve is in NC, and Janet is in TX. Thanks for reading about our adventures! We're leaving for Beijing, China in a month so we have a lot of planning to do!

Public Display of Affection

Friends and family:

This is my (Janet's) last post from Chile. I am leaving Valparaiso and Steve (mi corazón) and Kareem (mi manjar) tomorrow for NC, USA to go to a wedding, then to TX to see my significant other (mi amor), and then to CA to see my family and Linda & Grace (mis favoritos). While I have a lot to look foreword to at home, I am very sad to be leaving my two traveling companions. I have been assured many times by Kareem and Steve that I am very lucky because many women would love to be in my shoes: sleeping under the same roof with them in remote mountain cabins, eating the same food at the same table, gazing into their deep, long-lashed brown or hazel eyes, and of course wearing the same pants. I must concede that they are two very fine specimens of men and therefore I must indeed be very lucky. Having spent the past few weeks almost constantly in their company, I have learned a lot about them (maybe too much) and still managed to fall even more in love with them.

Kareem and Steve:

I've enjoyed our Chilean adventures together, good and bad. I love you two very dearly, very sincerely, and very easily; even when you're giving me a hard time, or when you're angry with me, or if your hair is ridiculously long, or if you've finally lost the baby fat in your cheeks. When we leave each other at the terminal tomorrow, the next time I see you will be in Beijing. I wish you both a safe journey through Chile, home, and to China. I will miss you.

With much love,
Janet

Fruit and Fire

Today we bought 5 kg of fruit at the market (clementines and kiwis) for about $2, but that does not come close to today's top story in which Janet almost burned down the kitchen, the house, and Valparaiso. Luckily Steve was around to save the day. We'll spare you the boring details, but nobody was hurt, nothing was damaged, and Janet is no longer allowed to touch anything.

That is all.

Good night.

Monday

Hola!

Today, went to school. Our teacher was about 45 min late because he thought we were staying in the mountains until today. Or maybe he thought we'd be eaten by bears. Anyway, we learned commands so we were studying that earlier todday and watching movies in Spanish at the same time of course. We went to the market for food after lunch and picked up some ice cream as well. There is an orange-colored, mystery fruit-flavored ice cream that seems to be pretty popular here, but we weren't brave enough to try it, so we just got chocolate. Kareem has been eating it like it doesn't go straight to his hips, but he is also on the Valparaiso exercise plan, so maybe he'll still look decent by the time the carton is finished. Only time will tell.

We're also making plans for Janet's imminent departure this Thursday. She will be returning to the United States Friday around noon. Steve's Dad very kindly offered to pick her up! Thank you Steve's Dad!!

If it's a nice day tomorrow, we may walk to the open market for some fruit. Janet also has to buy a towel. It's a long story and it was her fault. We are not really sure where to buy towels here, so we'll have to figure that out as well.

We hope you enjoyed our pictures from this weekend. Once again, Steve worked hard putting them up.

With love as sweet as manjar,
Janet, Steve, and Kareem

Cozy Cabaña in Cajon del Maipo

Good evening from the southern hemisphere,

Well we pretty much had an awesome weekend and have some awesome pictures to show for it, but the camera battery died so we can't post them until tomorrow. Nevertheless, here's a little summary of our weekend spent in the shadow of the Andes.

We arrived at Cajon del Maipo after a 45 min walk to the terminal, a 1.5 hr busride to Santiago, 1 hour and 1 transfer in the Santiago metro system, and another hour long ride in a bus to our final destination. We were dropped off at the side of the road around 2pm and the cabaña was just a short walk away. It was pretty small and just had a bathroom, a little kitchen, and a room with one big bed next to a little cement fireplace. It was very peaceful and there was a great view of the mountains from our window. The boys had the fire going in no time and then it was time for tea, bread and manjar, hotdogs, and s'mores. Steve and Kareem displayed their marshmallow-roasting, story-telling, and back-massaging expertise and we whiled away the evening. I also had to borrow Steve's pants. So now both Kareem and I have worn Steve's pants, but I'm still not sure who looks best in them. During the night, Steve and Kareem took turns keeping the fire going and we stayed pretty cozy... or at least I did. The next day was more of the same. We enjoyed the crisp mountain air and views and ate toast and manjar, tea, hotdogs, and s'mores. Sadly, we had to go home in the afternoon. We returned to Santiago by bus, crossed the city by metro, took another bus to Valparaiso, and then went home on foot.

All in all, it was a great weekend; maybe the best one we've had so far. We're pretty tired, so we're turning in early.

Pictures of our mountain cabaña go up tomorrow so stay tuned!!

Hugs and kisses,
Janet, Steve, and Kareem

Cabin in the Woods

Good evening!

Tomorrow the three fearless explorers will be getting up extra early to walk to the bus terminal on the other side of Valparaiso, then catch a bus to Santiago, then ride the metro from one end of the city to the other, and then catch a bus to the small city of San Alfonso in the Cajon del Maipo which is almost in the Andes Mountains in order to spend the weekend roasting hotdogs and s'mores over a fire in a cabaña in the woods!

If you think that's a little crazy then you're probably right, but we're going to do it anyway because we're young and reckless and crazy is what we do best. Plus we may never be in Chile again and in a few years, we'll be old enough to know better (maybe).

Wish us luck! Hopefully my favorite outdoorsmen Steve and Kareem will know a thing or two about starting fires. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that (tight jeans aside) these are two very capable young men and I am quite confident of our survival. So we are signing out until Sunday night! Hopefully we'll have some great pictures to post!

Kisses,
Janny, Kareemo, y Esteban

Kareem Wearing Steve's Pants

Opps, I dropped my pencil. Can you pick it up for me Kareem? Thank you.

EDIT: Kareem says that no one understands this caption so I will elaborate. Kareem was wearing Steve's pants in this picture because his only pair of jeans were in the wash. They were a tad tighter than the pants he is normally accustomed to and I tricked him into posing for this photo by pretending to drop my pencil and asking him to pick it up. I can't believe we didn't get any comments on this. Not one.

Day off = goofing off

Dear friends,

We had a day off from school today and it's still raining, so we just hung around all day, watched Spanish TV (weird commercials), and ate cookies that Steve bought for us. Thanks Steve!!

Well, tomorrow it's back to our daily routine. We have school and then we have to go to the grocery store to get supplies for this weekend. We're still waiting for the cabaña place to email us back, but hopefully it'll go through. Here's some pictures from earlier this week. I also have in my posession a picture that words cannot describe, but I have to check with Kareem to see if he'll let me put it up. Check back for it tomorrow...

Good night from the other side of the world (but just an email or a blog away)!

Who looks better in Steve's pants? I honestly couldn't tell you.

One of the few pictures of all three of us in the same frame! We're in a little cafe just up the road from our house. They're not really big on coffee here, so this is the only place we've been able to have good coffee. Mmmm... coffee....

Tuesday and Wednesday

Hello,

Sorry for not posting last night.

Well it's raining and we're fresh out of manjar, so things could be better, but we're keeping our spirits up. Yesterday we had a small adventure in the kitchen. Kareem and Steve made us some homemade hummus with fresh chickpeas we bought at an open market. I was in my room researching for this weekend, so I'm still not quite sure what happened, but I heard a lot of pots clanging and maybe some yelling. Anyway, the hummus turned out really good with just a hint of lemon and hot peppers. I hope they'll make it again, but the experience may have been too traumatic.

Anyway, this weekend, we're planning on renting a cabin in the mountains. We're just planning on hanging out and roasting some marshmellows and hotdogs. We've emailed some places in a town called San Alfonso, so hopefully they'll email us back soon. It should be very exciting. Check back later today or tomorrow for a few pictures and more details of our weekend plans!

Love,
Estaban, Yanet Y Kareemo

Manjar and Monday

Good evening/morning!

After a weekend of traveling and not much studying, we really had to buckle down and practice Spanish today, so not that much happened. Plus it was pretty cold, so we spent most of the day in our beds or watching Spanish TV. This morning we got up early so we could go to our favorite bakery for some fresh scones before class only to find that for one reason or another, they didn't have any. We were sorely disappointed because we were really looking forward to them. Instead, we tried to satiate our desire for scones with candy bars. Over the course of the day, we probably ate five different kinds, some of which were good, some of which were bad, and none of which were as good as a nice fresh scone...

Anyway, as you may remember from a previous post, our friend Kareem is currently in possession of only one pair of jeans. These jeans are not just his only pair of pants in Chile, they are his favorite pants in the entire world. We heard him speak of them today with more passion than we have ever heard him speak with on any topic. Needless to say, he has very been unwilling to part with them even for one night so that they can be washed. To make a long story short, today we got to see Kareem in some very tight (almost indecent) borrowed pants and his precious jeans are in the wash as we speak.

Steve also came up with an awesome idea for this weekend, but more on that later when our plans solidify. By the way, Steve forgot to mention that we have finally tried something called manjar this weekend. It's a very sweet, caramel-like Chilean topping which people put on just about everything. Anyway, I wouldn't have thought to mention it, but the guys are really excited about it for some reason.

Well, it's way past my bedtime. Thanks for reading!

Love,
J,K,S

Sunday Travels: Con-Con

Well, after resting for the night, we got up around 9am today (Sunday / Domingo). We decided we would travel to a town not to far away called Con-Con. There are many towns that are located on the coast of Chile, Chile is 4300 km long (2671 miles), so there are a lot of possibilities to pick from when choosing a coastal town. We chose Con-Con because it was not too far away, we could make a day trip out of it and Con-Con is known for their very tasty Sea food. We were excited because we have not had any sea food yet, and we figured it would be pretty fresh considering it is located right on the coast. The bus trip was rather short, it probably took around 45 minutes. Once in Con-Con we explored the beach and many of the resturaunts to see who had the best sea food for the best price. We finally settled on one and it was a good choice.

The coast line in Chile is very unique. You can be walking on a flat beach with no dunes or hills or rocks, and then drive 15 minutes down the road and see a beach full of jagged rocks and huge cliffs. Con-Con offered, unlike Maintecillo, a beach full of jagged rocks and huge boulders. The surf was rather rough in Con-Con and it seemed to attract the local surfers. Please enjoy the pictures of us in Con-Con, Chile.

Yes, in Chile, the Birds are as large as Steve.

Janet's Last Weekend or NOT!

Well today (Saturday, June 9th) was an extremely interesting and packed day! We were under the assumption that this was Janet's last weekend in Chile, so Kareem and I wanted her to pick any place in Chile that she wanted to go. So she chose to go to a Vinyard/Winery in CasaBlanca Valley, home of many different white and red wines, and many that you all purchase from the grocery stores in the US. So off we went, we left the house around 9am, and 4 buses (Los Micros, they are called Micro buses here, because in Europe, they have Double-Decker Busses, and they call them Macros, but they only have single-story busses here). Anyways, 4 buses later, we ended up in CasaBlanca Valley. CasaBlanca literally means in Spanish White-house, Casa=house, Blanca=white. Once in CasaBlanca Valley we walked to a Winery/Vineyard called Veramonte. This place was extremely impressive, however when we got there they said the Winery was closed. It was closed due to a private party. So we were kind of disappointed.

Now imagine this, we took 4 buses to get here and are out in the middle of a valley with nothing around us except Vinyards. As far as we can see there is nothing around us except Vinyards. So, we were dropped off by a bus at a winery/Vinyard that was closed, and we didnt know when the next bus would be... could be 30 minutes or hours. So what do three Medical students do when they are stuck in the middle of a valley surrounded by Vinyards? Well we decided that we would walk to the next winery/Vinyard that we saw on our bus ride to the current location that we were at. However, Janet, Kareem nor I could remember how far it was away. So fast forward a little, and about 3 hours later, we were still walking and finally come to the next Winery/Vinyard. Here is the bad news: It was also Closed. So by this time we are extremely tired, and probably have walked close to 10 or 12 Kilometers in the middle of a valley and all we wanted to do was find one Winery/vinyard that we could tour. (plus this was Janet's last weekend-in-Chile-Wish, or so we thought, it turns out some dates got mixed up, and it is not her last weekend, but thatis a minor detail).

Well it turns out that we caught another bus, (this is now our 3rd bus). We rode the bus until we got to a 3rd Winery/Vinyard Called VINA MAR! FINALLY, this Winery was open. (It is now sometime around 3pm, and we set out on this journey around 9am). Vina Mar was open and we fulfilled Janet's wish of being able to tour a vinyard/winery. We took a lot of pictures, so please enjoy them. We bought a bottle of their wine that they produce in the winery and drank almost all of it there. It was awesome. So, sit back and enjoy more pictures. Please click on Photograph for enlarged picture.
